How to plan the lighting of a room
How to plan the lighting of a room
One of the advantages of LED lights is that they allow to
place points of light in different places of a room, thus achieving different
environments. If a system of spotlights or double ceiling is used, the lights
can be placed exactly where we want, although we must take into account certain
basic rules to achieve the desired effect and the whole room is well lit.
To plan the lighting of a room it is important to take into
account very different factors. First of all, the dimensions of the room, not
only its square meters but also the height of its roof. The higher a ceiling
is, the more light intensity we will need to achieve the same effect.
We also have to take into account the standard separation
between the lights. These are usually placed approximately 50 cm from the
walls, but in large rooms, this distance can be raised to 60 cm. There is
usually one meter of light between one light and another. But, of course, these
are standard measures that must be adapted to another of the most important
factors when planning the lighting of a room: its distribution.
If we are dealing with a square or rectangular and totally the diaphanous room that is going to have a single use, this planning of which we
have spoken may work well, but in most houses, the rooms are used for several
different uses and these will determine the type of lights and the distribution
that is made of them.
Types of lights
There are different
types of lights that can be placed in a room depending on their location and
use. We can talk about ceiling lights, wall lights, ornamental lights and
reading lights.
The ceiling lights are those that are placed on the ceiling
of the room. They are the main ones and those that will mark the general
lighting of the room. In a dining room, a good example of a multifunctional
room, they have to be placed so that they illuminate mainly the center of the
living room and the dining table.
To achieve this, it is necessary to look for a type of lamps
with a specific light amplitude that allows focussing the lighting towards those
areas, but without the rest of the room is dark or with darkened areas.
The wall lights are placed on the walls and are usually
designed to give an intimate atmosphere to a room. They are very soft lights,
like those that can be placed on the wall of the sofa or on the television to
get a suitable setting for a quiet talk or to watch a movie.
It is important to have different keys of light to
illuminate the dining room without illuminating the room, the room without
illuminating the dining room, or using only the wall lights. In this way, the best environment will always be achieved and rational use of light will be
made.
The ornamental lights are currently very fashionable and
are, for example, the strips of led lights that are placed in some rooms,
especially in the moldings. They can also function as ambient lights and are
totally independent of the general lighting of the room.
Finally, there are lights to read, which could be the lamps
that are placed next to the sofa or next to an armchair to be able to sit down
and enjoy the intensity of light focused on what is being read. This type of lights
are also those used in desk lamps in student rooms, thus creating an adequate
light for a workspace.
